Seems it was basically a publicity stunt. Maybe a lesson to trust one's instincts - I wondered at the time about how just pouring some water onto his closed mouth, (as I recall), could produce a sensation similar to drowning, whereas footage of real waterboarding I've seen on the news always appeared to involve pouring water directly onto the face. The marine involved, Klay South, says he had no idea what he was doing.

In any case, Christopher Hitchens also allowed himself to be subjected to waterboarding and concluded that it is torture. I disagree. While it seems clear that waterboarding cannot be endured, the same is true of a root canal without novocain.
