Democrats twice as likely as Republicans to see ghosts, believe in astrology

Byron York notes a Pew survey on Americans' spirituality that has some entertaining findings:

Conservatives and Republicans report fewer experiences than liberals or Democrats communicating with the dead, seeing ghosts and consulting fortunetellers or psychics.

Specifically, Democrats are twice as likely as Republicans to say that they've seen a ghost and more than twice as likely to believe in astrology. Democrats are also more than twice as likely to have consulted a fortune teller.

Byron is commendably charitable about the reasons for these rather striking findings, but I think the most likely explanation is that for many, "spirituality" is a dumbed-down substitute for religion.

Also, Democrats are several times less likely than Republicans to give charity.
