One quarter of Americans could be non-religious in 20 years

This will come as a surprise to many, but in fact this trend has been noticable for some time now.

So many on the Left have elevated the American Religious Right to such an all-consuming object of obsession and paranoia that they can't see much of anything else.

They still think that George Bush's two election victories were because of this demographic's vote. Except it couldn't have been because they've never represented anything near half the electorate.

The Republican wins were based upon a much broader coalition of voters, including many gays and lesbians amongst others.

But as this report makes clear, the Republicans are possibly in the process of driving many of these people away by moving too close to the Religious Right. Especially so if this demographic trend continues, and that spells long term trouble for them.

Hey, that's a big caveat though. Dare I say that God only knows how these cultural currents will ebb and flow?
