Nine members of a New Zealand family have appeared in court on manslaughter charges after another member died during an indigenous Maori exorcism ceremony. Janet Moses, 22, drowned in October 2007 when water was poured down her throat as part of the exorcism, known as a makutu. Full story here Hard to believe this still happens in supposedly advanced and civilised countries. Have we indulged this sort of thing with the absurd belief that all cultures are "okay" and no feature of any, (other than our own of course ), can be criticised? But surely cultural relativism is so last century? |
